The Color Red Through My Eyes

Color is a fascinating phenomenon. While many people associate the color red with aggression, loudness, blood, fire, and danger, it symbolizes a haven and brings calm whenever I see it.

How would I describe the color red? It’s the taste of freshly ripe, sweet-sour strawberries or cherries as they melt in your mouth and bring a tingly sensation that keeps you reaching for another punnet of the fruit. It’s a new toy thoroughly wrapped in plastic that you can’t wait to rip open. In winter, red is that smooth, warm blanket that brings comfort when you wrap it around yourself and snuggle on the couch with a slice of velvet cake and a cup of hot cocoa.

Red can also be dangerous but in a fun way. Imagine hot peppers on your tongue paired with your favorite pizza roll or meal prepared by a loved one; the frenzied sound of blood rushing to your head from the pepper sting symbolizes the liveliness of the color. It is the carefree, innocent nature of a child casually running in a field of poppies and stopping to pick a flower and gracefully place it in their hair.

Red smells like the sharp, metallic tang of blood in your nostrils. It’s the feel of the sun on your skin when you’ve been swimming for too long in the pool — the burn telling you it’s time to get out. It’s the musky smell of vanilla and honey from a bouquet of roses on your special day.

It is that hysteric, loud and high-pitched laugh at yourself when you do something stupid or at something that wasn’t even funny.

Red is a color of beautifully wrapped emotions and traits that make us human; love, hate, anger, passion, danger, vibrant, sensitivity, and determination. Red is life.
